Generation is a social mobility charity with a mission to support those facing barriers to employment into life-changing jobs they otherwise could not access. To achieve this we deliver a model of 1-3 month, free, full-time profession-specific bootcamp training, focussed on in-demand careers (tech, health and green sectors), with extensive 1:1 pastoral support and matchmaking to interviews with employer partners and deep jobsearch support for 6-months post programme completion.
Alongside our work in the health and green sectors, we have now supported >3500 learners through tech-sector focussed programmes across the UK (London, Manchester, West Midlands, Leeds/Yorkshire, and Scotland - Glasgow/Edinburgh). Learners have had on average 3 barriers to employment and been c.20% with a disability, 20% unemployed for >12 months, c.50% from a low socioeconomic mobility background… all telling stories of struggles to find work.
These learners have been reached through wide, multi-channel outreach campaigns, combining digital marketing and word-of-mouth referrals with deep partnership work with beneficiary-facing partners including jobcentres, national charities, and local charities/community organizations. 90% of learners who start programmes complete them with 90% consistently (strongly) agreeing they feel confident more in their future.
Crucially we have then placed >1700 into jobs. This is c.65% of learners who complete our 6-month placement phase. Our success rates are around double what other provisions in the system achieve.
These outcomes have not just been any jobs but great jobs in cloud computing, data engineering, data analytics, and IT support paying on average >£25k/year (c.3x pre-programme income, often Universal Credit). And these outcomes are sustained with c.80% of learners keeping their employment for over a year.
We have placed learners with >1300 hiring employers from large to small engaged by our team of partnerships managers, with many employers, including those with whom we built the programmes with hiring repeatedly. Through this we’re making an increasing impact on not only people’s lives but also the diversity of the tech sector and the workforces of leading employers.
